Get Acquainted

If you’re new to Fort Wayne or just new to the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Community Center we would like to invite you to come and get acquainted.  Meet participants, volunteers and tour the facilities while learning about our many programs. Refreshments will be provided. Ages 50+.

Active Aging Week

Start off your downtown celebration at the Community Center with free holiday activities for the kids.  There will be balloons, crafts, refreshments, movies and a free photo with an elf. Donate a new or gently used bear and enter a drawing to win a giant elf bear. Kids can shop for inexpensive holiday gifts for $1 or less at the North Pole Stop-n-Shop. Mom and Dad can shop that night, too. Community Center patrons have been crafting holiday items to sell on Candy Cane Lane. The money raised from the crafts will be donated to the Community Center’s wellness classes. Finally, check out the expanded Santa’s Workshop light display on the Community Center roof (lighting ceremony at 5:00 p.m.)!


Monday Luncheons

Bring a friend or two and join us for these special Monday luncheons.  We’ll begin serving at 11:30 a.m., but you are invited to come earlier and enjoy cards or table games with other fun-loving folks.  You may resume play after lunch if you wish.  The fun is FREE but the lunch is $3 per person unless otherwise indicated (December lunch is $4 per person) Paid reservations are required by 4:00 p.m. on the preceding Wednesday. (We cannot accept transfers or refunds.) Each luncheon will be followed by a short presentation at 12:15 p.m. for those who are interested. Age: 50+.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program

The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is a recreational exercise program designed for anyone with arthritis or related rheumatic disease and/or joint problems (hip/knee replacement, stroke, etc.)

This class is designed to:

Improve strength and flexibility

Reduce Pain caused by arthritis and other ailments

Increase mobility

You can start this program at any time. You do not have to wait for the next session to begin. Your fitness condition will be assessed during the first class on September 21 so please try to make it to class that day. Certified instructor: Sue Bair. Many thanks to Sunshine Home Health Care for providing medical professionals to conduct the assessments. An organic breakfast, compliments of Miller’s Merry Manor will be served at the November 2 class session. Ages 50+.

Stretch & Flex Stretch & Flex

Stretch & Flex is for those individuals who desire a more intensive workout than offered in the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program.  This session is perfect for seniors who play golf or tennis. The class consists of 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise designed to help:

decrease fat mass

resting heart rate

cholesterol levels

You will be using light to medium dumbbells to increase muscular strength and flexibility. Each class will end with a light stretching.  Prior participation is not required; however, we recommend you consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program. Your current condition will be assessed during the first class on September 21, so please plan to attend. You can start this program at any time. Everyday Exercise

The benefits of a daily exercise routine designed just for you are too numerous to mention.  Instructor Sue Bair will incorporate the use of handheld weights which will improve your:

cardiovascular endurance

muscular strength

flexibility and balance

mobility

For those new to this program, a fifteen-minute orientation of the fitness equipment will be offered upon request either before or after the class. Silver Striders Walking Group

Mondays/Fridays, 8:00-9:00 a.m.

Walking for fitness is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the United States.  Walking with a group is safe and makes it easier to stay motivated because it’s a lot more fun than walking alone.  Join the Silver Striders Walking Group on Monday and Friday mornings.   Once you see how much fun walking with a friendly group can be you won’t want to miss a single day!  There is no pre-registration and no fee.  Just show up in comfortable walking shoes and join the fun.  Alley Kats

The Alley Kats is a 20-member performing tap dance troupe made up entirely of active senior women age 50 and over. Rehearsals are held at the Community Center on Thursdays at 1:00 p.m. To audition for the troupe or to book a performance, please call 427-6461.



Goldenaires

The Goldenaires love to sing for an audience! They practice weekly for various functions throughout the community. To audition for the Goldenaires or book them for your own special program, please call 427-6461.  Ages 50+.



“Simply Dance”

Come casual and simply dance! Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with dancing at 7:30 to the sound of Music Express. Pretzels, chips and a cash bar will be available. Tickets may be purchased by using the registration form on page 59 or by calling 427-6462 with your Visa, MasterCard or Discover. Registration forms may be mailed or dropped off only at the Community Center, 233 W. Main Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46802. Tables of eight may be reserved only if all parties sitting at the reserved table register together. Your registration must include the name, address and telephone number of EACH person in the party.

The cost is $8 per person.  Space is  limited to 104 people, so please register early.  Please refer to code# 441000-F1 on your registration form.  Ages 21+.  Reservation deadline: September 3.


Holiday Ball

Get dressed up and put on your dancing shoes! You’re going to the Holiday Ball! Dance to the beautiful melodies of Brass and Ivory. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with music from 7:30 until 10:30 p.m. Light snacks will be served at intermission. Tickets may be purchased by using the form on page 59 or by calling 427-6462 with your Visa, MasterCard or Discover. Registration forms may be mailed or dropped off at the Community Center, 233 W. Main Street Fort Wayne, Indiana 46802.  Tables of eight may be reserved only if all parties sitting at the reserved table register together. Pickleball

Pickleball is similar to badminton and tennis. It is played on a court with the same dimensions as a badminton court with a hard paddle and perforated, plastic ball (whiffle ball). It only takes a little instruction.

55+ Holiday Dinner
and Light Tour

Reserve your place today for the annual 55+ Holiday Dinner and Light Tour. The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a delicious Swiss steak dinner and holiday music. We will board the buses (courtesy of Excursion Travel) at 6:30 p.m. and take off on our planned route of Fort Wayne’s finest Christmas light displays. This evening is sponsored by Covenant Care Indiana, Inc., Covington Manor, and University Park. Paid reservations are required by December 1. Historic Walking Tours

Fort Wayne has a rich history just waiting to be shared. Join us on our walking tours of south central and west central downtown. Our South Central tour features a 1½ mile walk past the Embassy Theatre, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and the gravesite of Chief Richardville. The West Central tour will take you past some of the most famous homes owned by those who helped form Fort Wayne. Stops include the Carol Lombard house, the Colonel Sion Bass home and Noah’s Ark Diner. We will cover nearly 2 miles in just under 2 hours.  Wear comfortable clothing and your walking shoes. The terrain is mostly level and paved, however, some areas may not be suitable for wheelchairs. There have been several changes in the law lately. Even if you already have a will or trust, these changes might affect you. Elder Law Attorney Steve Adair will answer your questions regarding wills and estate planning. 2010 Write a Will Day

You don’t have to be wealthy to leave a legacy. You need only to have a cause you care about and the “will” to make a difference. Volunteer attorneys will be at the Community Center on November 16 to discuss your will and charitable bequest. If you choose to make a charitable bequest, a simple will shall be prepared for you, free of charge. Call 461-6218 now to make an appointment. This program is an initiative of the Planned Giving Council of Northeast Indiana.



Senior Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP)

A trained SHIP counselor will be available on the first Thursday of each month to answer your questions about Medicare, Medicare Supplement Insurance, Medicaid and Long Term Care Insurance and help you understand your rights as a beneficiary. Assistance is also available in organizing your medical bills, Medicare and other insurance records and in filing claims and appeals. Call 427-6460 to schedule an appointment. This service is free and is not affiliated with any insurance agent or company. Ages 50+.

AARP 55 Alive Defensive Driving

AARP and the Community Center are teaming up to offer a one-day defensive driving course for seasoned drivers. Don’t miss this opportunity to brush up on your driving skills. Ages 55+. Call 427-6460 for more information or to sign up. Registration deadline: October 2.

Foot Care Clinic

A Lighter Step, L.L.C. provides foot care at the Community Center including foot soaking, nail trimming, lotion massages, and callus shaving for persons age 50 and older.  Appointments are required and may be made by calling 427-6460.  Please bring a foot tub and towel. Cash or check payment is required at the time of the appointment.

Diabetic Screening

Approximately 17 million people in the United States have diabetes. While an estimated 11 million have been diagnosed, 5.9 million (or one-third) are unaware they have the disease. The Foster Park Lions Club, District 25-B will offer FREE diabetes screenings at the Community Center on the first Thursday of every month. No appointment is required.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

Approximately 28 million Americans, or about one in every ten people in this country, have a hearing loss and many don’t even realize it. Audiologist Dr. Gregory Lowe conducts FREE hearing screenings at the Community Center on the first Tuesdays of each month. The screening only takes 15 minutes. Please call 427-6460 to make your appointment and arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time. Ages 50+.

Maxim Health Systems Flu Shots

It’s flu season again. Protect yourself from the nasty bug this year. Maxim Health Systems will offer flu and pneumonia shots by appointment at the Community Center on October 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Call 427-6460 to schedule your appointment. You must bring your MEDICARE PART B CARD and other insurance information.  In order to be a candidate for the flu and/or pneumonia shots you must:

Meet a minimum age requirement of 18 years

Not be on any antibiotic.

Not be suffering from an active infection

Not have an allergy to eggs

Not have an allergy to Thimerosal, Gentamicin or other aminoglycosides.

Bring Medicare part B and bring all insurance information.

If you do not have MEDICARE PART B, the cost is $30 Flu shot and $45 Pneumonia shot at time of immunization.

Volunteer and Instructor Opportunities

Parks and Recreation is not just for kids! We offer numerous opportunities for retirees and senior citizens to join our family of over 200 volunteers and become involved in Community Center programs and operations. As a Community Center volunteer you will find satisfaction in being of service to the community, develop your interests, and make new acquaintances. You may choose to volunteer on a regular weekly schedule or on an occasional basis.  Please call 427-6462 for more information. Program Assistant to assist people with disabilities so that they can participate in games and programs.

Information Desk Staff to greet the public, assists visitors, answer the telephone and take registrations (4 hour shifts)

Gift Shop Sales Persons (3-hour shifts), Take-in Assistant

Book Fair Helpers for sales, set-up and tear down

Santa's Workshop/HolidayFest Volunteers to help us with preparations for our 2nd annual "Santa's Workshop" to be held at the Community Center during the annual downtown lighting ceremony on Wednesday, November 24th (the night before Thanksgiving).

Volunteer and Paid Instructors to share your knowledge and skills with others by teaching a class. We are currently looking for daytime class instructors in computers, crafts, games, square dance callers and line dance instructors.

Computer Lab Assistants and Instructors to assist older adults in learning computer skills.

Special Events Assistants to assist with crafts and decorations, help with set-up, serve refreshments, coordinate activities and clean up on special occasions throughout the year.
