Lifetime Sports Academy

The Lifetime Sports Academy, under the supervision of Academy Director and Wayne High School teacher and track coach, Tom Hogan, is open to boys and girls ages 8-18 and offers free group lessons in the lifetime sports of golf, tennis and swimming. The program begins June 14 in McMillen Park and operates Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Group lessons in golf, tennis and swimming will focus on skill development, training, and participation and will be taught by certified coaches and highly trained professionals and volunteers. The Lifetime Sports Academy is funded by the Fort Wayne Sports Corporation and the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department and is offered to area youth FREE of charge.
The Lifetime Sports Academy is located in the McMillen Park Pavilion just west of the pool (enter the park off Oxford). You may come as often as you wish and stay as long as you like. Special activities such as soccer, softball and volleyball will be organized at various times throughout the week for children not participating in group lessons. The Fort Wayne Community Schools summer lunch program will also be available at McMillen Park for Academy participants. Register on-line through May 31, on Opening Day, or at the McMillen Park Pavilion at any time during the program. A Lifetime Sports Academy brochure with schedules, registration form and detailed information is available on-line or by calling 427-6000. Beginning June 14, you may call the Academy at 427-6760 or stop by the pavilion in McMillen Park.
John Daly Visits LSA
John Daly gave LSA participants golf tips and a demonstration on the opening day of the Academy for 2010. Daly is a two-time Major winner who has played on the PGA tour for over 20 years.
“We’d like to thank the Mad Anthony’s for scheduling John Daly’s presentation,” said Perry Ehresman, Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Deputy Director. “Hearing from an athlete who’s succeeding is very inspiring to kids who are learning a new sport. We’ve had 860 kids earn golf clubs over the last 12 years and I have a feeling we’ll be giving away a lot more after John’s visit.”
Year Around LSA
The Year Around LSA started in October 2007. Participants in the program are eligible to sign up if they have earned their tennis racquet (at a beginner status) and/or golf participants that were members of the birdie or par club.

Testimonials from participants and parents:
"I really appreciate how the sport schedule is made so that all the sports can be played by the kids. One of the kids I bring has physical disabilities but the swim teachers (all the adults) make her feel welcome without making her feel different, plus she is learning to love a sport and now she can be active. Thank you so much!" Belinda O. "The staff are friendly, caring, and supportive of each child and their abilities." Shelby E.
"I really enjoyed playing golf." Jonathan C.
"What a great program! Earning my set of clubs this year was the coolest thing I’ve ever done!" Ryan G.
"This has been an excellent opportunity for my kids. They are now great golfers and will carry that skill with them the rest of their lives." Jamie G.
