Unwind Your Mind: Activities for Persons with Early Dementia

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia is life changing. Because individuals with dementia often feel isolated and disconnected, it is important that opportunities to participate in community activities that are meaningful, creative, and social are made available to them. Such activity can provide a sense of competence, a reduction in depression, and improved relationships with family members. Studies have shown that arts, crafts, computers and social activities help slow mild cognitive loss by up to 50%. The Community Center, in cooperation with Lutheran Life Village Village of Birchwood and Lori Stock of the Fort Wayne Alzheimer Association, is now offering classes and activities for those with signs of early dementia. A schedule of upcoming classes and programs are NOW available on the Unwind Your Mind link.

Community Center Testimonials

The Community Center (CC) provides valuable services to citizens of all ages in the Fort Wayne area. The CC is a clean and safe venue for people to meet and participate in a variety of classes and activities.  The staff are friendly and professional and the CC has sought out positive upbeat instructors.

I faithfully participate in 2 Cardio-Flex classes per week, attend a weekly downtown walking group, and volunteer for a handful of activities.

The importance of my involvement at the CC center became apparent to me recently. One of my long time friends shared that he had lunch with a group of friends and former coworkers.  He said they talked about their pains, surgeries, embarrassing memory lapses etc.  This is not the conversations that occur in the fitness classes and social gatherings at the CC that I attend.  We talk about books, movies, adventures, and activities that we are engaged in.  The contrast is sharp.

I believe the the CC has created an supportive environment where optimism and engagement occur.

Hi Patti and Team,

It was so nice to meet you and other staff  in Ft Wayne. Your welcoming smile and the way you treated us was just as you knew us for years.

It was so nice to show us around the community Centre and the jigsaw puzzle will be the talking point back in Australia for a long time. We have already had messages from our friends with the pics we have put up of it.

The trail you sent us on was perfect to find all the great pics of Ft Wayne and the pack of goodies was unreal to come back to. The key rings were perfect too and the grandkids will love the Frisbee.

If you could send me a Picture of when you get the Puzzle up on the wall and if there is any with the people who made it happen would be great.

If anyone is ever travelling to Australia, please do not hesitate to email us.

Thanks again for the great time we had in Ft Wayne.

Roslyn and Mark.
