Junior Golf Tour Celebrates 30th Anniversary

On Tuesday, July 16, the Junior Golf Tour will celebrate the end of another successful season, as well as the 30th anniversary of the Tour. This program allows boys and girls, ages 13 – 18, to test their skills against other young golfers on a variety of area courses.

The current Junior Golf Tour has 11 events. Over the years, many of the best Junior players in the area have played the Junior Golf Tour, including current LPGA player Amanda Blumenherst and four-time Men’s City Champ Scott Pieri.

Before 1983, the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department, along with Pepsi and Bordens Ice Cream, ran two golf events during the Three Rivers Festival: The Pepsi Classic, for kids 13 – 18 years old, consisted of one round of golf at each of our 3 golf courses--Foster, McMillen and Shoaff. The Bordens Pee Wee Championship, for kids 7 to 12, was a golf tournament held at McMillen Park Golf Course.

In 1983, with the popularity of youth golf growing, Parks & Recreation officials came up with the idea to start a summer-long golf competition that would utilize other Fort Wayne golf courses, and the Junior and Pee Wee Golf Tours were born! The program was very popular the first year and has continued to grow.

To celebrate 30 successful years of the Tour, golf balls were awarded at every tournament throughout the summer, every player will receive a special anniversary t-shirt, and back packs will be awarded to a girl and boy participating in the Junior and Pee Wee Tours on Tuesday.
