Sex Life of Plants

Thursday, November 14, 6 – 7:30 pm

Plants exhibit a reproductive cycle that biologists term "alternation of generations".  Parts of a plant or separate parts of its life cycle have different chromosome numbers in the plant's cells depending on the part being observed. Using slides and living and preserved plant material, Dr. Larry Yoder from Goshen College will follow the alternating pattern as it appears in plant groups including the fungi, mosses, ferns, horsetails, conifers and flowering plants. Ages 13-adult. Registration deadline: November 7. Min.12. Max. 35. Fee: $12/public; $10/Conservatory member or volunteer. For more information, call the Conservatory at (260) 427-6440. To register, call the Parks & Recreation Department at (260) 427-6000.

 Science Fun: Natural Disaster

November 16, 11am & 1pm

Join us the third Saturday of each month as we investigate a different topic with fun and family-friendly experiments, demonstrations, and activities – most of which can be repeated at home.  Each program lasts 45-60 minutes and is appropriate for ages 5 and up.  Participants in NISTEM (www.nistem.org) can also earn points for attending.  Preregistration is not required and the program is free with regular Conservatory admission. In November, volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes are all natural disasters that Indiana doesn’t experience on a regular basis.  Other parts of the world however, must be on high alert for these types of disasters constantly. We’ll be looking at these fascinating works of Mother Nature and even creating our own.

Gardens of New Orleans

Through November 17

The Conservatory captures the sensuous feeling of the lush gardens and window boxes of the French Quarter and Garden District of New Orleans in this summer-to-fall exhibit. Showy flowers, trailing vines, wrought iron and clipped symmetry represent the ordered chaos of the “Old South” style. The fleur-de-lis motif symbolizes the heavily French influence of the Cajun settlers. A French Quarter-style balcony overlooks the garden, offering a little birds-eye view. The grander feel of the Garden District is expressed in the fountain, statues, and overarched walkways of the central gardens. A touch of seashell acknowledges the New Orleans’ watery ties to the Gulf of Mexico, while a whimsical garden party setting will stimulate the imagination of our younger visitors. Brides and photographers are sure to appreciate the vistas this garden offers. The exhibit is sponsored by WAJI Majic 95.1 FM. For more information, phone (260) 427-6440 or visit our website at http://www.botanicalconservatory.org/ href="http://www.botanicalconservatory.org/">www.botanicalconservatory.org.

Fireside Christmas

November 23 – January 5

To recreate the warm and cozy feeling of a traditional Christmas celebration, the Conservatory Showcase will be filled with red poinsettias and elements that spark feelings of nostalgia for the happy family holiday of yesteryear. Did you ever lie in bed straining to hear Santa’s reindeer on the roof? Leave cookies and milk for a late-night visitor? Celebrations that brought together gatherings of family and friends, were decorated with homemade ornaments, and anchored us with food, music, and hope. A comfortable family room vignette with fireplace and Christmas tree will provide a delightful backdrop for photographs. Regular Conservatory admission applies: $5/adult, $3/child; ages 2 and under free. For more information, phone (260) 427-6440 or visit our website at http://www.botanicalconservatory.org/ href="http://www.botanicalconservatory.org/">www.botanicalconservatory.org. Sponsored by PBS 39 and WAJI Majic 95.1 FM.

Piñatas Invited for Paradise

November 23-December 8

Piñatas, a traditional feature in Mexican birthdays and Christmas parties, are a creative outlet for everyday artists. Families, youth groups, language classes, and service groups are invited to design, construct, fill, and donate imaginative piñatas. The Conservatory will showcase these works of art for two weeks in our Sonoran Desert Garden as the Piñata Paradise. In mid-December, the Conservatory donates the candy-filled creations to local children’s agencies to be enjoyed in their holiday celebrations. To donate a homemade piñata or for more info, call (260) 427-6440 or visit our website at http://www.botanicalconservatory.org/ href="http://www.botanicalconservatory.org/">www.botanicalconservatory.org. Sponsored by PBS 39 and WAJI Majic 95.1 FM.
