October 1, 2024

In its first year, the goal of the Great Tree Canopy Comeback (GTCC) had a simple yet ambitious goal: to plant trees. The response was overwhelming. People from all walks of life came together to dig, plant and celebrate the beauty of nature. Since then, the GTCC has successfully planted over 2,800 trees across various parks and trails throughout the county. Each tree represents a step towards a greener future, providing shade, beauty and a habitat for wildlife.

However, as the years went by, the advocacy group, the Friends of the Parks of Allen County recognized that simply planting trees wasn’t enough. By 2018, the initiative evolved to include not only tree planting but also the important task of caring for these young trees. This meant addressing another major issue: invasive shrubs and trees that were taking over the parks’ natural wooded areas. These invaders threaten the growth of native species, and removing them has become a crucial part of the GTCC's mission.

This year, on October 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Friends of the Parks of Allen County invite everyone to join in another exciting day of making a difference. The event will focus on two locations: at Kreager Park on North River Road, where volunteers will plant new trees to continue the legacy of restoration, and at Historic Fort Wayne Park, 1201 Spy Run Avenue, where another team will focus on removing invasive species, helping to clear the way for the native trees and plants to thrive.

The sense of community during these events is truly special. Families, friends and even local groups come together, united by a common goal. It’s more than just planting trees; it’s about building connections and fostering a love for the environment. Many participants return year after year, eager to see the growth of the trees they planted and to help in new efforts.
