Stargazing Nights at Lindenwood Nature Preserve offer a unique chance to step away from the bright city lights and dive into the wonders of the cosmos. Led by local astronomer Dale Ruppert, this free event gives people of all ages a chance to learn about constellations, meteor showers and the moon—all while enjoying a peaceful night outdoors.
Each Stargazing Night begins in the parking lot of Lindenwood Nature Preserve, where participants gather before heading out on a nighttime adventure. A short hike through the woods sets the scene for the night’s lesson, making the experience feel like an exciting journey into the unknown. Along the way, the sounds of nature fill the air, adding to the peaceful and mysterious atmosphere. Once the group reaches the viewing area near the pond, it's time for the real show to begin.
Dale Ruppert brings his telescope to help everyone see the night sky in a whole new way. Whether it's spotting famous constellations, watching for shooting stars or getting a close-up look at the moon’s craters, there’s always something exciting to discover. Best of all, each session focuses on something different, so every visit offers a fresh experience.
Here’s what’s coming up:
- Constellations – Friday, March 14, 8:00-9:00 p.m.
Ever wondered how to spot Orion’s Belt or the Big Dipper? This session will help connect the dots and reveal the stories behind the stars. - Lyrids Meteor Shower – Tuesday, April 22, 9:00-10:00 p.m.
Keep your eyes on the sky as streaks of light flash overhead! The Lyrids are one of the oldest known meteor showers, and with a little luck, stargazers might catch some shooting stars. - Flower Moon – Monday, May 12, 9:00-10:00 p.m.
May’s full moon, known as the Flower Moon, will be shining brightly. This is the perfect night to learn about moon phases and see the moon’s surface up close.
Stargazing Nights are a great way to connect with nature, learn something new and enjoy a quiet escape from everyday life. Whether you're a space enthusiast or just curious about the night sky, this event is a fun and relaxing way to explore the universe.
