If you’re looking for a simple, fun way to spend a Saturday morning with the kids, mark your calendar for June 7. The 37th Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby is happening at Hurshtown Reservoir from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m., and it’s the kind of event that brings families together in the best way outside, in nature, doing something everyone can enjoy.
This long-running tradition is a favorite for families across the area. It’s open to kids ages 16 and under, and it’s a great chance to slow down, enjoy the outdoors and maybe even catch a prize-winning fish. Whether your child is an experienced angler or just learning how to cast a line, this derby is all about having a good time and making memories.
Here’s the Reel Deal
On the morning of the event, on-site registration begins at 7:30 a.m., so be sure to arrive early and grab a good spot along the shore. Fishing officially kicks off at 8:00 a.m. and goes until the weigh-in at 11:00 a.m. This gives plenty of time for kids to enjoy the water, try out their casting technique and hopefully catch a fish worth bragging about. At 11:30 a.m., the top anglers will be honored during a short awards ceremony.
Prizes will be awarded in five different age categories, with a special grand prize for the child who catches the biggest fish overall. But remember: this is a catch and release contest, so don’t forget your bucket to hold your fish before weigh-in. Each contestant is allowed to enter only one fish, so make it count!
Things to Bring
This is a BYOB event, Bring Your Own Bait, that is. Participants must also supply their own tackle and a bucket to keep their fish in temporarily. And while some fishing contests come with a tangle of rules and fees, this one is designed to keep things simple and stress-free. Because June 7 is an Indiana Free Fishing Day, no fishing licenses are required—so everyone can join in the fun.
Admission to Hurshtown Reservoir is just $5 per car, and the derby itself is completely free. Whether your child is a first-timer or a little fishing pro, this event is a wonderful way to kick off the summer. It’s all about fun, learning, and creating lasting memories with family and friends.
So, mark your calendar for Saturday, June 7, and come be a part of a cherished Fort Wayne tradition. The 37th Annual Kids’ Fishing Derby is ready to make a splash, and the only thing missing is you.
