The Conservatory is open on the first Thursday night of the month for a discounted admission of just $1 per person. During each $1 Night you can also drop in to our program room for a fun and educational lecture or activity. No reservations required. $1 Night Insight: Mandatory “Mum” Meeting
Thursday, November 2, 6 – 7 pm
Some people have a hard time overwintering chrysanthemums, asking, “Why do my fall mums never come back?” There could be a very good explanation for this and Lynda Heavrin, Manager of Landscape and Horticulture for the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department, will show differences between garden and pot mums, share growing tips, and touch on special techniques used to create more spectacular flower displays.
Anita Trick Art Display
November – December: Pastel, Watercolor, Oil
Public Reception: Sunday, November 5, 1 - 3pm
Anita is a representational artist who has participated in over 40 group shows and as many solo business exhibitions since joining Fort Wayne Artist Guild in 2008. Anita grew up in Southern California, graduating from USC with a BA in English. Art was always part of her life from an early age, even though she had no formal training. As a career Army officer's wife, she took art workshops wherever they were stationed. Her goal is to capture the excitement of a fresh snowfall, a colorful flower, an interesting building, or a spectacular sunset. She is an avid photographer, always ready for that special photo. She mostly enjoys painting in her home studio, but will paint en plein air on occasion. She has taken watercolor classes for several years with local artist Lynn Diamente and has attended workshops taught by various artists preparing her in the areas of watercolors, acrylics, pastels and oils. Anita’s display is open to view in our meeting room during public hours. Meet the artist on Sunday, November 5, 1-3 pm, during a punch and cookie reception. Holiday Essential Oils Make & Take
Saturday, November 18, 1 – 3 pm
In need of some rejuvenation and wanting to become more familiar with essential oils? Come participate in this workshop where you will learn what essential oils are, where they come from, how to use them, and why they are amazing. Instructor Samantha Reitman is an independent distributor of Young Living and has been using essential oils daily for over 3 years. She will teach how you can improve your well-being by making some amazing products. In November you can make a holiday-scented room spray and an immune support roller bottle. All supplies are included in registration fee. Ages 15+. Registration deadline: November 8. Min. 10. Max. 36. $18/person; $15/Conservatory member or volunteer. “Snow Days” garden exhibit
November 22 – January 7, 2018
Do you remember when school was cancelled because of unexpected winter weather? Snow days were a surprise, a break in routine, an invitation to play. In the Conservatory’s holiday imagination, snowkids go out for snowball fights and forts while snowmoms bake cookies and prepare hot chocolate. Snow angels mark the spot where families spent time together. Fishing, skating, sledding, and other activities fill the day. After sunset the light lingers, bouncing off that white blanket of snow. Wet mufflers are dried by the fire and everyone recounts their tales of the day over a supper of soup and cheese toasties. Then it’s off to bed…because there might be school again tomorrow. Garden in Lights

We’ve decorated all through the gardens, indoors and out. Enjoy beautiful poinsettias from the Atrium to the Desert, along with the Snow Days theme, but don’t miss our outdoor Terrace display of lights and synchronized holiday music. Especially effective during our evening hours on Thursday and Friday nights for four weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the gardens are lovely throughout the holidays and provide a tremendous backdrop for family photos, out-of-town guest entertainment, great conversations, and even marriage proposals! Make the most of your visit as you enjoy one of Fort Wayne’s treasured resources for beauty and relaxation. Our gift shop will also be open during public hours for holiday shopping. Holiday Kick-Off Party

Enjoy hot chocolate and a cookie, meet Mrs. Claus, and get a free professional-quality photo with Santa. You can also meet two live reindeer that know all about the North Pole. This year the Fort Wayne Youtheatre’s Charlie Brown Christmas Jazz Trio and dancers will be performing. The gardens are decorated for the holidays, and you won’t want to miss the animated light show outdoors. Be sure to participate in the Fort Wayne Downtown Lighting Ceremony either before or after your visit to our beautiful holiday garden and displays. Family Garden Close-Up: Snowflakes

SNOW has blanketed the Botanical Conservatory! As you enjoy our “Snow Days” exhibit, stop by this special fourth-Saturday learning station to learn about nature’s beautiful winter decoration: the snowflake! Enjoy a holiday treat and make your own unique snowflake to display at home. This drop-in program is part of a series that offers a closer look at our plants and gardens with exploratory walks, hands-on activities or demonstrations. Included in your regular Conservatory admission: $5/adult, $3/child age 3-17.
Autumn Shinrin-Yoku
Thursday, November 30, 6 – 7:30 pm
Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, is the experience of immersing oneself in the sensory gifts of nature. This can be done in a forest setting, but also in gardens and parks. The benefits are not only a greater sense of well-being, but a boost in immune function and ready access to lower stress hormones and boosts in serotonin levels. This is not your regular walk in the park, but a series of invitations using the senses to rediscover your inner child and your connection with the natural world. Being relaxed, revitalized, and better equipped to handle the stresses of daily living are the goals of this forest bathing walk. Instructor Christy Thomson is a life-long resident of northeast IN. She is the only certified forest therapy guide in Indiana and is thrilled to share this opportunity with the Fort Wayne community. Registration deadline: November 22. Ages 18+. Min 5.
