Fort Wayne, IN: Mayor Tom Henry is joining mayors across the country for the sixth annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service today, a nationwide bipartisan effort that highlights the impact of national service in tackling city problems. By unleashing the power of citizens, volunteer programs have a positive and lasting impact—making our cities a better place to live.

This year, Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Director Steve McDaniel and Volunteer Center Executive Director Jean Joley joined Mayor Henry at Lakeside Park to thank the group of volunteers who came out to clean up debris and mulch the park. Representatives from the Volunteer Center, Hobson House, Benchmark, Easter Seals ARC, Byron Health Care Center and AWS were in attendance this morning for the cleanup.

“We’re fortunate to live in a community that values the importance of volunteering and giving back,” said Mayor Henry. “Today is a great example of residents and organizations coming together to make a lasting and meaningful impact.”

“Today is a great example of the successful partnership we have with the Volunteer Center to help organize volunteers, keep our parks clean and to increase the number of groups who commit to our Adopt-a-Playground program,” said Director McDaniel. “A total of 17 playgrounds have been adopted by community groups who commit to cleaning three times per year for their three-year adoption period. We still have plenty of playgrounds available to adopt and would welcome the additional help.”

Groups interested in adopting a playground may fill out an online form at www.fortwayneparks.org/adopt-a-playground.
