Fort Wayne, Ind. – NIPSCO honored the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Department as one of the recipients of the company’s virtual 2020 Luminary Awards, recognizing leaders and organizations for their outstanding commitment to strengthening local communities, especially during these most trying times as many organizations that work hard to provide basic human needs are facing challenges of their own.

Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation was honored with the Local Government Excellence award in recognition of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic for creating new, safe programs and maintaining the city’s parks throughout the crisis.

Steve McDaniel accepted the award and said, “When the country was shutting down in late March and April, our parks became the only place many could safely go outside of their homes. This award reflects the incredible amount of hard work and dedication that our teams showed to keep serving our community throughout this crisis. I am incredibly proud of this department’s employees.”

The Luminary Awards were created in 2012 in celebration of the utility’s 100-year anniversary to honor individuals or organizations that have displayed leadership in the areas of: Local Government Excellence, Community Leadership, Economic Development, Education, Environmental Stewardship and Public Safety.
