Fort Wayne, Ind. – The following events and programs are happening in August at the Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun Street:

 

Botanical Roots Concert Series

Fridays, August 6-27, 8:30-11:00 p.m. Doors open 7:30 p.m.

Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun St.

It is our 15th season serving up roots-genre concerts al fresco on the Conservatory Terrace. This August, we invite music lovers to come out every Friday night and see national touring bands and local openers that make everyone want to get on their feet and get down to the beat!

August 6 - Nikki Hill; Pete Dio & the Old Dirty (Soul)

August 13 - Zion Lion; Lisa McDavid Duo (Reggae)

August 20 - Mississippi Heat; G-Money Band (Blues)

August 27 - Dwayne Dopsie and the Zydeco Hellraisers; Carolyn Martin Duo (Zydeco)

Concerts are held outdoors rain or shine. Lawn chairs are welcome and encouraged. Food and beverage available for purchase from Mad Anthony Brewing Company; no outside food or beverage is permitted. $1 Night Insight: Desert Life

Thursday, August 5, 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Come explore the desert and learn about animal and plant adaptations in an arid climate. Enjoy a friendly cactus craft too. On the first Thursday night of the month, receive discounted admission of just $1 per person and even take advantage of free parking! Also, be sure to drop in on the DNI: $1 Night Insight for a fun themed activity from 6:00-7:00 p.m. No registration required.

 

“Visions of the Old West” Garden Exhibit

Through November 14, Public hours

Stroll down the main street of a not-quite-Ghost Town, listen to ragtime tunes from the honky-tonk saloon and appreciate the wild and rugged beauty of cacti, succulents and wildflowers in the surrounding hillsides. Pump water from the community well, play a game of cracker-barrel checkers in the shade and look over the “WANTED” posters for local outlaws. Summer annuals will make way for autumn chrysanthemums in warm russets, tawny golds and blazing orange. Sponsored by the  M.E. Raker Foundation and Wilson Foundation.

 

WILD WEST Sessions

Thursday-Saturday: August 19-21, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Unearth your own gemstones to take home during WILD WEST Sessions at the Botanical Conservatory! A free bag of soil to sort using an old-fashioned mining sluice is included with regular admission and while supplies last. Additional mining material is available for purchase throughout the “Visions of the Old West” garden exhibit. No registration required.

Garden Railroading

Saturday, August 14, 10-11:30 am

Registration deadline: August 7

Session Fee: $12

Whether inside or out, plants and model trains are hobbies that complement the other making it fun for all ages! Find out all about it with Blane Ryan, a Master Gardener and Train Guru who will be presenting budget friendly ways to create your very own garden railroad. Details such as site selection, planning and maintenance will be covered. You will also learn about the differences in major scale models with an emphasis on G Scale model trains. Informational handouts, starter plant and garden admission are also included. Ages 8+.

 

Tai Chi - Skill Building

Tuesday, August 17, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Registration deadline: August 10

Session Fee: $9

Revive energy levels with Tai Chi summer sessions for beginning to advanced students. Skilled instructor, Sandy Gebhard will help participants discover the benefits of this gentle art form that relaxes the body and focuses the mind. At the end of each session and at their own leisure, students are welcome to take a meditative walk through the gardens. Please bring a water bottle and wear comfortable fitting shoes. Drop-ins are not accepted at this time. Ages 18+.
