Promotes benefits of active, healthy & engaged lifestyles

Fort Wayne, Ind –Fort Wayne, Ind –  As wellness and healthy living become increasingly important priorities for all populations, the annual Active Aging Week, October 2-6 treats older adults throughout North America to a broad array of exciting opportunities that promote physical, mental and social health.

Initiated by the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA) in 2003, Active Aging Week (AAW) highlights the value of embracing all dimensions of wellness – including physical, emotional, intellectual, social and more – to enrich quality of life.

Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Director Steve McDaniel says “according to the National Recreation and Park Association, the top activities that older adults want to see offered through local parks and recreation include outdoor and indoor activities, physical exercise and educational opportunities.” He adds, “Active Aging Week at the Community Center offers all of those options in a friendly and fun atmosphere.”

“Active Aging Week is a celebration of the contributions of older adults,” says Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Community Center Manager Mary Wagner-Stockman. She notes “it’s also an opportunity to challenge society’s expectations of aging.”

This year, as part of AAW, the Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation Community Center will showcase the capabilities of older adults as fully participating members of society and spotlight the role models who lead the way.

Participants age 50 and above can choose from the following free events: cornhole, kayaking, golf, pickleball, billiards, disc golf, downtown mural tour, table tennis, shuffleboard, Bocce, Connect Four, timed jigsaw puzzling, Wii tournament and trivia. To sign up, just call 260-427-6460 or stop by the Community Center located at 233 West Main Street. Please register at least two business days prior to the scheduled event. A free Vaccine Clinic is also available on October 2, from 10:00a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Community Center.

A full listing of the tournaments and all activities is found on page 46 of the Fall Fun Times and at https://www.fortwayneparks.org/images/PDF/Community_Center/AAW_Bro_23.pdf.
